Ideas for a Garden Wedding Cake

When having a wedding or reception in a garden, that presents a wonderful opportunity for your wedding cake. A garden wedding cake will fit in perfectly with your special day, and allows great flexibility when choosing a design.

While your garden wedding cake could be modeled after a very traditional cake, it can also be created with a more modern flair. For example, instead of traditional tiers, you could instead opt for offset tiers.

Because the key to the garden wedding cake will be the beautiful flowers, you are pretty much free to choose a wedding cake of any shape that you would like. When it comes to the flowers for a garden wedding cake, you have some options here as well. If you are to be married or hold your reception in a garden that is very well known for a certain flower, consider having that bloom highlighted on your cake. That does not mean that those flowers must overpower the entire cake, but simply that they are included in a way so as not to be missed.

Another option is to have the baker create a garden of sugar flowers on your cake. Ask him to include several varieties of sugar flowers. An experienced baker will be able to choose a selection of flowers that will complement each other. Also, he will have the skill to add just the right amount of flowers to ensure that the cake will not look crowded or too busy.

In addition to using sugar flowers for your garden wedding cake, another option is to use all real flowers. The baker can create a very simple cake and leave spaces between each tier. In those spaces, the florist or baker will add a selection of fresh cut flowers. The flowers can be chosen based on your wedding colors or they can be selected based on the flowers that grow in the garden in which the wedding or reception is to be held.

A garden wedding cake should play up the theme of your wedding. That means that when the guests see the cake, there should be no doubt that it was designed in a way to be an important part of your overall garden theme. Another fun idea for a garden wedding cake is to include other elements that one might find in a garden. For example, adding some butterflies or a dragonfly. One bride had her tiered wedding cake placed on top of a sheet cake. On the sheet cake she had the baker create an entire garden scene complete with benches, children playing and a happy couple strolling among the roses. The tiered section of the cake was made to look like a fountain in the middle of the garden scene.

When you work with a baker to design your garden wedding cake, don't allow yourself to be boxed into what you think a wedding cake should be. Instead, be open to new ideas and work with the baker to create a cake that is both beautiful and uniquely your own.
